!NOTES: WILLIAM, only son of Roger Sumner & Joane Franklin, married
Mary West* at Bicester, 22 oct. 1625. He came to New England in 1636
and settled at Dorchester, Mass. He was made Freeman of the Colony 17
May1637 and at various times held many offices of respectable
importance.
Marriage date for William and Mary West is extracted from the Register
of Bicester, Oxfordsshire.
*Charles H. Sumner of "The Sumner Family Association" stated in a
letter: "I am convinced that Mary West listed as wife of William Sumner
of Dorchester MA was really Mary Swift. "I have a letter from the vicar
of the Church of St. Edburg in Bicester, Oxfordshire, confirming that the
handwriting was misread." " Also, an article by a prominent researcher
states that Thomas Swift called William Sumner his brother-in-law."
1025. Mary WEST \ SWIFT
"Genealogies of Woodstock Families" (p. 345) and an article in The
American Genealogist (Jan. 1943) by Mary Lovering HOLMAN indicate that
William's wife's name was Mary SWIFT, daughter of Robert SWIFT of
Rotherham, County York and brother of Thomas SWIFT.
